Instagram Workshop

The Instagram Workshop about architecture took place last week-end and I was one of the lucky participants who got selected!
Architecture photography is not one of my strong points so I saw it as the perfect opportunity to learn new tricks and get the feeling for it.
The workshop was sponsored by the Vienna Tourist board, which I want to thank again here!
The lunch was paid for and I guess everyone is like me and loves a free meal :)

It was fun to meet other Instagramers or Igers as one calls them in person and to put a face to the online name.
Such nice and fun people! Instagram is a great way to connect with people and even to get to know them and Vienna better.

We first had a short introduction by Tim Hatton alias the.hat on Instagram and then explored MQ for some picture material.
It was so much fun to explore a specific place with other photographers to search for the perfect angle and a unique setting, knowing that others are on the same look out. It was not really a competition but I saw it as a challenge for myself, to get the most interesting architectural picture I could get.
The pictures we took were analysed and then we headed for lunch at MQ Kantine, where I had a yummy pita haloumi.
Then we strolled through the first district towards the building of Sparkasse since the event of Open House took place.
I totally forgot to write about Open House but I guess all Viennese were informed about that in the news anyway.
On that week-end private houses and offices or buildings that are normally not open for the public could be visited and some places even had tours.
Great opportunist to explore unknown places! It will take place next year again in case you missed it.

Anyways, we then headed for the economic university campus which has a really interesting and new architectural design, which you can see for yourself.

shooting_vienna_igersworkshop shooting_vienna_igersworkshop shooting_vienna_igersworkshop shooting_vienna_igersworkshop

I do enjoy my food photography more since I can be creative and arrange my setting to my liking whereas a building is placed and you have to find the best angle by running around and looking for different perspectives ;)

Donaupark

There are any childhood memories I link with Donaupark since I spend a lot of time there with my parents when I was little.

shooting_vienna_donaupark
It is a great place for young families and small kids, as there are many different playgrounds making playtime exciting and fun!

shooting_vienna_donaupark

If you are low on energy and want to explore Donaupark more comfortably, you could take a ride in the Lilliputbahn.

shooting_vienna_donaupark

Teenagers and Adults have a wide space to do all sorts of sports. Playing Frisbee and soccer is quite popular in the summer.
There is even a school for bee-keepers here!

shooting_vienna_donaupark
Oh and of course the Donauturm is located here, where adventur-seeker can throw themselves off the 150m tower and bungee jump.
I would be so up for that if it would not be that pricey for some seconds of adrenaline ;)

The Korean-house recently was added and I have yet to try out their dishes, especially looking forward to their bibimbap.
When it is warmer, one can enjoy the dishes outside near the lake and enjoy the view.

When I went there on Monday snapping away I was surprised my a short snow fall. I am really looking forward now to this warm week-end!

Mondscheinbazar

Not your typical flea market, the Mondscheinbazar starts at 5pm till 11pm, with musicians giving live performances while you roam around. There will even be Burlesque performances, which I have never seen live before! Drinks and food will be available as well, so the entrance fee of 3€ is decent.

Mondscheinbazar ©Mondscheinbazar

It takes place in the tenth district in the ex-Anker Expedithalle, Puchsbaumgasse 1c. Directions how to get there can be found here on their website.
There is a facebook event page in case you want to read up more details.

Philippines – picture heavy post

This was my fourth trip to the Philippines but the first time that I have been there over Christmas and New Year.

shooting_vienna_philippines
I was able to celebrate with my relatives, whom I sadly don’t see that often since flying there is pretty expensive.
Best of all, the weather is 20-25° compared to cold and grey Vienna and I definitely won’t be visiting again in summer when it is so hot and humid.

How to get there: We always took different airlines while going to the Philippines and I enjoyed Singapore Airline and Korean Airline the most, due to their service and food ;)

What to see:
We did not do a lot of sight-seeing in Manila since we did that many years ago but we went to Tanay, to visit a friend and Boracay.
Tanay is just about 2 hours away by car and has lovely red volcanic earth.

shooting_vienna_philippines

Boracay is about 1 hours per plane from Manila but you need to take a boat to the island.
We have been to the island 6 years ago and so much has changed! We did not like it that much because there were so many tourists and a lot of hotels were being built. Also while helmet diving I noticed a lot of dead corals which is not only bad for sea life but also for the tourism which is not sustainable.
Boracay has a super long beach and we discovered behind some rocks a beach which was empty from people and brimming with small cute crabs.

shooting_vienna_philippines

The weather was not the best and it was raining for the most part. This is due to the climate change since in December it normally was always typhoon free season.

I am so fascinated with the different layers of rocks. I wonder what information they are displaying.

shooting_vienna_philippines

shooting_vienna_philippines

Can you spot the crab? ;)

shooting_vienna_philippines

shooting_vienna_philippines

We made friends with a kitten which seemed to belong to our hotel. It was so tiny and cute!

shooting_vienna_philippinesshooting_vienna_philippines

What to eat and drink:

What I miss most about Asia is the wide variety of fresh “exotic” fruits and the fresh seafood. I have a love for buko pie as well which is coconut pie made with the meat of fresh and young coconuts.

No Filipino party would be complete without lechon, a roast pig. Everyone loves the crispy skin but I am more after the super soft meat.

shooting_vienna_philippines

On Boracay I discovered a cute little restaurant called “the sunny side cafe” and I ate there every single day for breakfast. So yummy! And if you order their pancakes they are so huge, you can’t possible eat them by yourself!

shooting_vienna_philippines

we also went to the wet market on the island which really fascinated me as you can see from the picture spam ;)

This was our lunch!

shooting_vienna_philippines

shooting_vienna_philippines

shooting_vienna_philippines

Seafood is generally enjoyed with vinegar and kalamansi in the Philippines :)

General Information:

Traffic is a serious problem here and generally the way how people drive is quite intimidating.
The Philippines is not a super safe country, so take care of your belongings and avoid visiting the south of the Philippines, many tourists or foreigners are abducted there because of the conflict between the Christian government and Muslim rebels. The Philippines is the most catholic country in Asia and most of the muslim population is located in the south due to it being near to Malaysia and Brunei.

What I loved:

– Elza, the dog of my aunt is the cutest puppy and I am very sad for not having her around
– fresh mangos, coconuts etc.
– meeting with my relatives
– getting massaged and groomed for a fraction of the price I would pay in Vienna
– you can eat outside without being bothered by wasps (but beware of mosquito’s!)

What I did not like:

– air-cons are on everywhere and it gets super cold, especially in malls so bring a jacket!
– environmental pollution
– chaos on the airport on Boracay

What to pack:

The Philippines have the same volts as the US so you need to bring an adapter if you are from Europe.
Even if it is hot, you should always bring a scarf or a light jacket to cover yourself from the cold winds of air-cons.

Bee & Puppycat

Have heard of Bee and Puppycat?
I am proud to say that I was part of the funding on kickstarter for this super cute series and can’t wait to receive all that fan merchandise!

That was the promo video I fell in love with07077:

And this is Episode 1:

Somehow I stumbled over the first episode on Youtube and instantly loved the show. It is super fun, Bee herself is weird in her own cute way and there is some random adventure with puppycat going on.

Something totally random and not Vienna related at all but I just wanted to promote this series more since I really like it :)

Markterei this weekend

The Markterei is happening this weekend again at the Badeschiff and I am already super excited!

shooting_vienna_marktereiII
Not just because my favourite cupcake shop Brass Monkeys will be there, no also because Hy Kitchen and their delicious burgers will be there with lots of other regional producers. You can check the whole list on their facebook page and see for yourself what sellers will be attending.

shooting_vienna_marktereiII

I am really looking forward to Saturday and if you don’t have any plans yet, do come and check it out! :)

Bratislava Trip

The Mister and me have been in Bratislava last weekend, which is the perfect get-away from Vienna for two reasons.

shooting_vienna_bratislava

Number 1) It is just an hour away from Vienna Hauptbahnhof to Bratislava Hl. and number 2) it is a lot cheaper compared to Austria.
Just get a EUregio Ticket at an ÖBB counter for one person it is just 15€ for going there and back again, trains leaving every hour!

I actually was surprised about the price difference because I thought it wouldn’t be that noticeable. Another positive surprise was that the shops  in Slovakia are open on Sunday!
We didn’t know about that but a lot of Austrians come here to get some shopping done since Austria is mostly dead and boring on a Sunday.

I can be a bit stingy but I would always think; Why should I pay the full price if I can get the same service/product for less?
We stayed at the Austrian Trend Hotel, for 2 nights with a great breakfast buffet (a guy makes you fresh omelettes) and it was only 44€ per Person!
If you are interested swing over to this site and buy your voucher, it is valid for 3 years and a really great offer!

shooting_vienna_bratislava
The location was perfect, just 1km away from the train station, near the city centre and the room was really spacious and comfortable.

shooting_vienna_bratislava

After inspecting our neat room we dropped our bags and went to discover the city streets of Bratislava. Huge picture spam below!

Chestnuts, 200g for only 2,4€! In Vienna you pay around 2€ for just 6-7 pieces. The Mister and me were in chestnut heaven and very very happy.

shooting_vienna_bratislava shooting_vienna_bratislava

It is our tradition to check out supermarkets when we are in another country to see what they have to offer and we stumbled over a shelf stuffed with different kinds of Marlenka! Marlenka is one of the Mister’s most favourite cakes and it is a delicious walnut and honey cake, especially great for autumn and winter.

shooting_vienna_bratislava shooting_vienna_bratislava

For dinner we went to the Slovak pub near our hotel which was lovely and very cheap. They had traditional Slovak food which we curiously tried out.

shooting_vienna_bratislava

shooting_vienna_bratislava shooting_vienna_bratislava

garlic soup served in a bread bowl 3,5€ for the Mister.

shooting_vienna_bratislava

and a tasty cabbage soup with sausages for me for 1,9€.

shooting_vienna_bratislava

and this traditional dish which was some kind of potato spaetzle with bryndza, a salted cheese from sheep milk topped with crispy bacon fat.
I didn’t like the pieces of pure fried fat but the rest was yummy for only 3,9€.

After dinner we walked till the shopping centre Eurovea and found Bubbleology there after storming to Marks & Spencers food section.

shooting_vienna_bratislava

Sadly the matcha latte did not taste like matcha at all and they didn’t have my favourite topping namely tapioca left but I still love the interior and concept of the store.

shooting_vienna_bratislava

We really enjoyed our trip to Bratislava and plan on coming back spontaneous again, probably just for a day since it is really not that far away.

Have you been to Bratislava and have recommendations for my next visit? Please let me know :)

Palmenhaus Schönbrunn – Date place

Have you ever wondered where to have a romantic but cute date besides the mainstream coffee/movie/dinner/lunch- date?

If he or she has no botanophobia, the Palmenhaus would be a perfect option!

shooting_vienna_palmenhaus

shooting_vienna_palmenhaus

The admission is 4€ per person and the place is just so magical and beautiful, you easily find things to talk about and get to know each other better.
The place is separated into different climate zones, the cold-, temperate- and tropical zone. Things can get hot and humid there *eyebrow wiggle*

shooting_vienna_palmenhaus

I actually went there with the Mister to check out the blooming Victoria Amazonica but we sadly missed the bloom.
Too late but we still had a great time. Check out the huge amount of pics below :)

shooting_vienna_palmenhaus

The wonderful blooming entrance area. Very welcoming!

shooting_vienna_palmenhaus

Don’t forget to look up from time to time. I just love the super high ceiling!

shooting_vienna_palmenhaus

shooting_vienna_palmenhaus

We sat down at the benches and imagined how it would be like to live here. Wouldn’t it be so cool to have a hammock here and wake up in this place?
Luckily there are no snakes and no poisonous spiders :)

shooting_vienna_palmenhaus

shooting_vienna_palmenhaus

shooting_vienna_palmenhaus

There is even a small pond with fish. Super relaxing, I just love to watch the dancing water surface.

shooting_vienna_palmenhaus

Off to the tropical area, which indeed was very humid. We immediately peeled out of our jackets and enjoyed the variety of plants we have never seen before.

shooting_vienna_palmenhaus

Just hangin around ;)

shooting_vienna_palmenhaus

I just loved this flower so much! Doesn’t it look like a huge amount of dragon heads? What do you think?

shooting_vienna_palmenhaus

The leaves were so fluffy! I just love to touch plants and it makes exploring so much more fun.

shooting_vienna_palmenhaus

shooting_vienna_palmenhaus

Not in bloom but the Queen of water lilies is still impressive.

shooting_vienna_palmenhaus

And if you thought you could end your date by just walking out and home you are wrong!

Everyone in Vienna knows that Schönbrunn is THE place to see and feed squirrels. Don’t forget to bring some nuts and you will be loved by those furry cuties!

After the food donation you can wander through the autumnal ally and walk towards your next destination.

Work outing – Sledding at Semmering Zauberberg

Technically not really about Vienna but a lot of Viennese people come here for winter sport since it is only 1 hour away from Vienna and the closest place for winter activities like skiing, snow boarding and sledding.

We had a great weather but because it was around 5-10° the snow was artificial and got mushy soon in the afternoon.

shooting_vienna2014 shooting_vienna2014

shooting_vienna2014 shooting_vienna2014

shooting_vienna2014 shooting_vienna2014

I never knew sledding could be this much fun, normally you just go down a hill slope and that’s that, not much excitement after one or two times. Even though yesterday was a holiday, there were not that many people. The only downside is that I had normal jeans and no waterproof pants plus leather boots which did not like to get that wet.shooting_vienna2014
Learn from my mistake and go there prepared so you won’t get wet and have to worry about getting sick again, which I did not by the way, lucky me!

shooting_vienna2014

After all that hard work out we had some yummy Austrian food at Enzianhütte, which is located in the middle of the sledding route.
We had dessert at another Restaurant (because of a misunderstanding someone from our group missed lunch with us) which was near the parking space but the food was not that great. All the desserts seemed to miss something and tasted bland rather go somewhere else. There was a pizzeria right across which looked nice!

Here is more information in case you want to go sledding yourself at Zauberberg and want to check out their prices :)

November 4 Photo Challenge – Fun

Fourth Challenge: Fun

Shooting_Viennanovember4

My interpretation: Friends + taking Polaroid Pictures = Fun
I had to think a lot harder with this challenge. There is so much that is fun to me or what could be interpreted as fun.
It is a word with only three letters but quite tricky.

Random info: I settled with the Polaroid idea because I failed at taking a picture of myself looking “fun” with my Polaroid.
Be glad you can only see this photo :D
