Vollpension

One of my newest additions of places I frequently visit is Vollpension.

shooting_vienna_vollpension

This cute coffee and cake place opened about 3 months ago at Schleifmühlgasse 16 and from the interior it not only just feels like you are visiting your grandma, there are actual grandmas working in this shop and baking delicious cakes.

shooting_vienna_vollpension
I love this idea because the grandmas are not only able to earn money to their low pension but they know they are needed and are not socially isolted. Which is sadly most often the case with elderly people.

shooting_vienna_vollpension shooting_vienna_vollpension
On the positive side, they always have new cakes and I never saw the same cakes whenever I had one but then the negative side is that you will seldom have the opportunity to have your favourite cake again and will forever mourn it until you find a new favourite, and then mourn this one and so on. ;)

They also have a daily lunch menu and brunch on the week-ends, so if you are not a cake person you can also find something else there!
But seriously, who does not like cake?

Hotel Falkensteiner – Grill Friday

Last friday I had my official university graduation ceremony.
Since I “only” aquired a bachelor degree it did not seem that special to me but for my parents I opted for an official celebration which was quite interesting. I will do a post about that to let you help decide if you want to do one as well.

After everything was done we could not wait to go to the Hotel Falkensteiner and try out their barbecue-Friday.

You pay 39€ per person with one beer included and can eat as much from the side dishes buffet, the barbecue menu card and the dessert card as often as you wish to.

shooting_vienna_Falkensteiner

Everything was arranged very neatly and appetizing and the service was attentive and friendly.

shooting_vienna_Falkensteiner shooting_vienna_Falkensteiner shooting_vienna_Falkensteiner

After I tried the mixed grilled vegetables and munched on some prosciutto we moved onto the grill menu.
My favourite dish was the grilled lamb which I topped with chimichurri. The meat was so tender and the chimichurri was the perfect combination.

The mister enjoyed a lot of their beef steaks which were really nicely marinated and perfectly grilled to medium rare.
We also tried their salmon trout but I forgot to make a picture. Very soft and tasty as well!

shooting_vienna_Falkensteiner

After a big portion of grilled corn I was getting stuffed already and it got closer to dessert time.

The three choices were: grilled pineapple with caramel sauce, panna cotta with different flavours and tray-baked-cakes.
I just love grilled pineapples and had two servings of those and a lemongrass panna cotta. There was no place for the cake but I do not regret those pineapples! I liked the panna cotta from the mister a bit more which were the flavours vanilla and summer fruits.

We were all very happy with our choice to try out hotel Falkensteiner and can freely recommend it to any person! (probably not vegans though!)

Street Kitchen Food Market

Street food is getting more and more popular in Austria with the first Street Kitchen Food Market being held until today 10pm.

SKFM
I am so happy how many different sellers appeared and that I got to know many different vendors I did not know before.
A picture heavy post again, since the pictures speak more words than I can tell ;)

Our favourite cupcake seller, Brass Monkey was there too and we snacked on some choco brownies for around 3,2€. :)

I got to know Hildegard Wurst about 2 years ago and am happy that they recently opened their first shop at Operngasse this year.

shooting_vienna_skfm

The Mister and me had this delicious cooked meat with kraut and polenta, topped with amaranth. Super yummy but expensive for 6€.

shooting_vienna_skfm

A vendor selling goodies from Styria, where the Mister and me have been not too long ago.

shooting_vienna_skfm

That cute trailer in pastel sold frozen yoghurt but I did not get to try it out. Next time!

shooting_vienna_skfm

From Gourmet Nomaden I got this chipotle crockpot beef served with sour cream and fresh toppings. I paid 5,9€ and got a real bargain for my money. After that huge portion I was stuffed for good. The flavours were spot on!

shooting_vienna_skfm

The Mister had the Chinese sandwich. The flavours were also nice but the duck was a bit dry and sauce was missing.

shooting_vienna_skfm

shooting_vienna_skfm

He was very pleased with this fish sandwich though. The salmon was super soft and succulent, perfect with the guacamole, tomato and rocket salad.
Not very cheap, he paid around 7€ for this one but he said it was worth it.

shooting_vienna_skfm

Even the ORF, Austrian broadcasting corporation was presented here.

shooting_vienna_skfm

The sellers from Moniseur Yong were present as well, selling their hashi maki and jia bing.

shooting_vienna_skfm

Some South American vendors were here which I also have to try next time.

shooting_vienna_skfm

I did not try the snails since I was stuffed already but snail gulasch does sound tasty ;)
They also sold fried grasshoppers but since I ate one, which wasn’t prepared that well, I am not that keen on trying any for some time.

shooting_vienna_skfm

I did hear from a lot of people (my parents included) that it was way too packed and that the queues were just too long (today).
Luckily when we got there yesterday at 4pm it was still reasonably empty but we did not enjoy the bad acoustics for the music boxes and there really could have been more tables or toilets for that matter. One toilet is not enough!
All in all I am glad that such an event got organised and held in Vienna but I hope the organisers learn from their mistakes and that the next one will be a lot better :)

Sweet Potato Soup

Sorry for the late post, I got really sick over the week-end and still have a massive lump in my throat and a bit of a cold.
I actually was really looking forward to Veganista (an amazing vegan ice-cream shop in Vienna) because of their pumpkin spiced ice-cream but I guess that sadly has to wait. Has anybody tried it yet?

IMG_8205w

A week ago I made a sweet potato soup from the Nr.2 Deli of 2013, a great food magazine for only 3,3€, and the soup was so good!

shooting_vienna_spsoup

Here is the original picture which is a lot more intriguing.

IMG_8200w

The recipe is for four people and takes about 40 min.

Here is the translated recipe:

(I sheepishly substituted the meat for shrimps to reduce the cooking time as I was super hungry aaand lemons instead of limes because I was too lazy to go shopping.)

  • 350g neck of pork
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce
  • sugar
  • 1 Tsp starch
  • 700g sweet potatos, peeled
  • 2 bio limes
  • 2 Tbsp butter
  • 1 onion, finely diced
  • 1 red chili
  • 250ml coconut milk
  • 750ml of chicken broth
  • salt
  • 2 Tbsp of oil
  • pepper
  • and coriander (which I gladly left out)

Step 1) Cut the meat in very thin stripes and marinate the meat at least 15 min. in the mixture of the soy sauce, 1/2 Tsp sugar and starch.

2) In the meantime dice the sweet potatoes into 1cm pieces. Zest both the limes and cut out their flesh after zesting, carefully removing all of the white parts.

3) Melt the butter in a pot and add the sweet potatoes, lime chunks and onions, sauté them on medium heat for 4-5 min. Add the chili and both coconut milk and stock. Season it with salt and let it cook for 20min with the lid on top.

4) Preheat the pan and add oil, then add the marinated meat and cook it crispy, takes about 10 min.

5) Purée the soup with an electric blender and season it after your liking with sugar, salt and pepper or some more chili. Put the lime zest on the meat and serve the soup with the meat on top plus coriander.

And you are done. Pretty easy and tasty soup, perfect for Autumn!

Lubin – Restaurant Review

Since the mister had his birthday on Friday, we spend the day together and had a wonderful lunch at Lubin.

Lubin is a Croatian fish restaurant located in the third district in Vienna and definitely worth a visit! If you do drop by, remember to reserve a seat though.
It looks a bit fancy, the atmosphere is relaxed, the waiters friendly and the food simply delicious.
Their lunch menu is just such a great offer, for 9,9€ you get a soup and a main course. You can choose everyday between two options so it doesn’t get boring.

We settled down on our table and nibbled on fresh Croatian bread with generous amounts of the garlic and parsley in olive oil.

shooting_vienna_lubin
We just loved the dense bread which fit perfectly with the freshness of the garlic oil. I could eat this the whole day!
The mister chose the lunch menu and got his spicy fish soup.

shooting_vienna_lubin

I didn’t order a starter but got a freshly deep-fried sardine which tasted heavenly. Best of all it was for free!

shooting_vienna_lubin

In high spirits we awaited our mains and were not disappointed. Grilled Calamari with spinach and potato (11€) for me and grilled gilt-head sea-bream for him.
The calamari were done perfectly and were so soft and yummy.

shooting_vienna_lubin

The fish was excellent and perfectly done as well.

shooting_vienna_lubin

We are planning on going back soon and I hope you love it as much as we do.

Also they have a newly opened fish shop next to their restaurant. If I ever need fresh fish to cook it I would definitely buy it from them.

Bristol Lounge – Restaurant Review

The Restaurantwochen are over now already but I still need to tell you about my lunch at Bristol Lounge with Erwin.

It is very central and easy to reach since it’s literally next to an U-bahn exit of Karlsplatz but this is just one positive aspect.

The waiters were being very attentive and the ambience was amazing, it was definitely in my top-three-most-fancy-restaurants-I-have-ever-been-in-my-life as you can see from the picture. Erwin was wowed as well, not sure how many fancy places he has seen in his life though.

shooting_vienna_bristol

I did not make a picture of the bread because everyone knows how bread looks like but mostly because I forgot but nevermind that, look at their dips instead ;)
Olive oil with salt and then feta cream with rosemary. Yummy and refreshing, a good combination with the soup.

shooting_vienna_bristol

For starters we had truffled celery soup and I seemed to already know that this would not suit my taste buds. Yes I do not like celery but I have an even greater dislike for truffles. I was glad that I actually liked the soup even though I dislike both components, so great job on that! I did sneak some chunks of celery into Erwins soup.

shooting_vienna_bristol

Next up was the super soft beef cheek with corn, popcorn, mini corn, and corn puree. It was just so yummy,  I especially loved the meat in combination with the popcorn.
I think I have to try out some steak at home with popcorn as my side dish, no kidding!

shooting_vienna_bristol

Last but not least the kleiner brauner which is the austrian coffee slang for espresso with cream.
Again I was surprised how lovely this dish tasted even though I am not a huge coffee fan.

I especially loved the attention of details with the chocolate spoon and the fried mint leave. It looked great and was the perfect finish for such a lunch in a wonderful ambience for only 19€!!

shooting_vienna_bristol

Oh wait this was actually not the end, we received some more, truffles filled with alcohol to be precise!
A very sweet gesture. Pun intended.

shooting_vienna_bristol

I would love to return again for a special occasion, I think it is worth a visit!

Huth- Da Max – Restaurant Review

At the moment we have Restaurantwoche in Austria which means that in specific uptown restaurants you can dine a lot cheaper than you normally would.
I totally forgot to post about this special offer but there is another Restaurantwoche in Summer which I will let you know beforehand!
The website is here if you want to check it out.
A three course lunch is 19€ and a three course dinner is 29€ excluding drinks. Also if a restaurant has two or more Hauben (which are awards and I don’t know the english translation for that but you know what I mean, right?) you have to pay 10€ extra.

The boyfriend and me went yesterday to Da Max and we were positively impressed, mainly by the super soft Angus steak but let’s start from the beginning.

I liked the dark ambience, my camera not so much but please bear with the pictures I managed to take :)

shooting_vienna_damax

The three-course menu offered two options with an additional vegetarian option if you asked for it.

For starters the boyfriend went with US roast beef with mustard sauce and pignoli-pepperonata while I had molten cheese with caramelized onions and apples.

shooting_vienna_damax

Very fresh and light, I would have liked a bit more seasoning on this roast beef though. The bread had this characteristic smoky flavour from the charcoal-grill. Mhm!

shooting_vienna_damax

My wonderful and gooey molten cheese! Perfect combination with the caramelized onions and the sweet apple, I really enjoyed this dish.

For mains we both took the Angus beef which was medium rare and perfectly soft, grilled over a charcoal-grill and served with vegetable terrine and parmesan-potato creme. The flavour of the meat was amazing and it felt like a fluffy cloud in your mouth.

shooting_vienna_damax

After the two courses we were already pretty stuffed, I don’t know how we managed the desserts but we did somehow.

Desserts were picked and I ended up with a massive creme brulée on fire with complimenting mocha ice cream and berries while the boyfriend had lemon cake and vanilla ice cream.

shooting_vienna_damax

Great crust on the creme brulée and the combination with the mocha fit very well.

shooting_vienna_damax

The cake lacked a bit the lemon taste, it was very subtle but all in all a well done cake!

The service was attentive and very charming, I can definitely recommend you this place and shall return again to try out their burgers!
But for now my food baby and me wish you a good night ;)
